Lusitania PosterOn the 7th of May 1915, 100 years ago, 1,198 people lost their lives when the Lusitania was stuck by a submarine torpedo off the coast of Cork.

On that day Valentia Wireless Radio Station received the following SOS from the Lusitanaia; “Come at once big list ten miles off Old Head of Kinsale. MFA”. Just eighteen short minutes later, the great ocean liner sank. In the weeks & months that followed a number of victims were washed up on the shores of Cork & Kerry, including two who where recovered & interred on Valentia Island.

In their memory and all that lost their lives on that fateful day, a mass will be held at the Lifeboat Station, Knightstown at 3pm, Saturday, 2nd May 2015 followed by a wreath laying ceremony. Stories including the island connection will also be shared on the day.
