Getting Here


Valentia Island is accessible from the other island (Ireland) by road bridge from Portmagee and by car ferry (April – Oct) from Renard Point, Cahersiveen. The ferry crossing takes 5 minutes. This is a continuous shuttle ferry that operates every ten minutes, 7 days a week from April to October: 7.45 am to 9.30pm and Sundays 9am to 9.30pm. (July & August last ferry 10pm).

Coming on a flight of fancy? Fly into Farranfore and arrange private taxi or car hire to Valentia. Or take a bus from Farranfore into Killarney and connect with the daily busses that service south Kerry.

From Dublin
Visitors flying into Dublin can either take a train from Dublin Heuston Train Station in the city centre to Killarney (go to www.irishrail.ie) or take a Bus Eireann from Busaras Central Bus Station to Killarney and onto Cahersiveen.

Fly to Kerry Airport (www.kerryairport.ie) 50 minute flights – fastest option! Flights are available with www.ryanair.com from Dublin to Kerry three times a day. From there you are only 1 hour 15 minutes from our Island!

From Wherever…
Fly to Kerry Airport (www.kerryairport.ie), and then either rent a car or avail of public transportation (www.buseirann.ie)

Visitors flying into Cork Airport can hire a car at the airport and follow directions from Cork City. Alternatively, avail of public transport and either take a train from Cork Train Station in the city centre to Killarney or Bus Eireann from the Central Bus Station to Killarney. There is a regular shuttle bus service between the airport and the train station.

For visitors flying into Shannon Airport, there is a frequent shuttle bus from Shannon airport to Limerick if you are getting a bus or train to Killarney or you can hire a car from Shannon Airport and follow the driving directions from Limerick to Valentia Island.

Killarney is well serviced by the national bus & rail network.

Monday to Saturday: 9.40am & 3pm (all year), 11.30am (24 June to 25 August ONLY)
Sunday: 11.30am (24 June to 25 August ONLY)

Bus Times from Cahersiveen to Killarney:
Monday to Saturday: 8am & 12.05pm (all year)
Sunday: no bus service

From Cork – Drive time 2 hours 30 minutes
Take the N22 direction Tralee/Killarney, drive through Macroom, then onto Killarney. When in Killarney take the N72, direction Killorglin, drive through Killorglin and onto the N70 direction Cahersiveen. This route takes you along the stunning Ring of Kerry. Once you have arrived at Cahersiveen either (a) take the car ferry onto the island via Renard Point or (b) drive onto the island via the bridge at Portmagee.

From Limerick – Drive time 2 hours 40 minutes
Drive southbound on the M20 and turn off onto the N21 signposted Tralee/Killarney. Drive through Adare & Abbeyfeale. Take the N23 signposted Killarney. Drive to Farronfore and take a sharp right turn onto the R561, join the N70 and drive on through Milltown & Killorglin. Follow the signs for Cahersiveen. This route takes you along the stunning Ring of Kerry. Once you have arrived at Cahersiveen either (a) take the car ferry onto the island via Renard Point or (b) drive onto the island via the bridge at Portmagee.

From Galway – Drive time 4 hours
Follow the M18 southbound to Limerick. Continue southbound on the M20 and turn off onto the N21 signposted Tralee/Killarney. Drive through Adare & Abbeyfeale. Take the N23 signposted Killarney. Drive to Farronfore and take a sharp right turn onto the R561, join the N70 and drive on through Milltown & Killorglin. Follow the signs for Cahersiveen. This route takes you along the stunning Ring of Kerry. Once you have arrived at Cahersiveen either (a) take the car ferry onto the island via Renard Point or (b) drive onto the island via the bridge at Portmagee.

Take the M7 all the way to Limerick, leave the M7 and join the M20 southbound (Cork) and then turn off onto the N21, signposted Tralee/Killarney. Drive through Adare & Abbeyfeale.
