How does that saying go again - school days are the best days of your life... well most kids would probably disagree with this one, with the exception of those on our island. Why you ask, well come on, people plan holidays on Valentia, kids living here get to do all the fun stuff year round!
Pre-school & National School
On Valentia we are lucky enough to boast both an excellent pre-school and créche (which offers pre & after school care for school going children) and national school located almost side by side in Chapeltown. These are divided only by our community centre which plays host to a score of after school activities to keep kids entertained during those dark winter evenings and then the whole island becomes their playground from Spring to October with cycling clubs, swimming at the pier, football, rugby, cricket, sailing, kayaking... the list just goes on and on.
When the time comes to go further and hit secondary school, well tradition plays a role here, because since time began island children have been educated on the other island, Ireland. In years gone by, it included boarding school in far flung places such as Dingle or Killarney, or a crossing by open ferry from Knightstown to Reenard followed by a cycle up to town (Cahersiveen) come hail, rain or shine. These days its a much easier process with a school bus that goes to and from Cahersiveen daily.
There are plenty of options here also, with the O'Connell Centre, Cahersiveen, Tech Amergin, Waterville and the Skellig Centre for Research and Innovation based in Cahersiveen Library, all within easy access of Valentia and offering a wide range of courses for education and pleasure, with full-time, part-time, day or evening courses to choose from you have no excuse!
